Camp Connect: Enhancing Engagement through Streaming

Purpose and Rationale

To adapt to the evolving landscape of camp operations and enhance camper and alumni engagement, we propose the integration of a state-of-the-art streaming system at URJ Camp George. This initiative aims to make the unique spirit of Camp George accessible to all, regardless of physical location, providing an alternative and enriching experience for the camp community.

Objectives

  1. Community Engagement: Leverage streaming to deliver an immersive experience of camp activities, such as all-camp services, song sessions, and theatrical performances, fostering a deeper sense of connection within the camp community.
  2. Alumni Involvement: Use streaming to keep alumni connected and engaged, allowing them to participate in and relive the camp experience from afar.
  3. Efficient Operations: Utilize streaming for new camper orientation and recruitment events, minimizing the need for extensive travel and enabling centralized administration and remote participation.

Survey and Feedback

Before implementation, we propose conducting a comprehensive survey among camp parents to gauge their preferences and comfort levels with streaming services. This data will inform the development and customization of the streaming program to meet the community’s needs effectively.

Technical Infrastructure

To achieve seamless streaming, we recommend considering self-hosted video streaming solutions such as Ant Media Server, Owncast, or PeerTube. These platforms offer robust features, scalability, and compatibility with our camp’s unique requirements.

  • PeerTube: Ideal for sharing media content with the camp community. Staff can upload videos to a PeerTube instance, making them easily accessible while offering privacy and access controls.
  • Owncast: Suitable for live-streaming events, enabling staff who can’t be present to participate remotely.
